Region details
In general, Cuyo region is a mountainous dry area, but surrounded by important rivers with water coming from the Andes snow melting. In the province of Córdoba, there are many medium height hills as well as valleys, plains and plateaux furrowed by rivers. In this region, there is the second most crowded city in the country .only preceded by Buenos Aires-: Córdoba. The Central-European roots and culture are reflected in Villa General Belgrano, where the National Beer Festivity takes place, and in La Cumbrecita, a picturesque and dreamlike town.
Artificial irrigation systems enabled men to benefit more from the natural resources and change this dry area into a fertile and apt land for developing vineyards and then producing high quality wines that are well-known all over the world. This is why this region is known for its several wineries which you can visit throughout the year in Mendoza and San Juan provinces.
Trekking and mountaineering, particularly, in the Aconcagua, the highest peak in America (6.959 m, a.s.l.).
The way to the Andes that reaches the Paso de las Cumbres (Path to the Peaks) .that leads from Mendoza to Chile- is wonderful, with very nice places such as Potrerillos. There are also historical points, such as Puente del Inca (Bridge of the Inca), which was naturally formed over the Cuevas river.
As a main sports activity, the skiing practice outstands in the tourist center of Valle de las Leñas.
In the province of San Juan, the breathtaking Ischigualasto Provincial Park .also called Valle de la Luna- provides us with fossil remains of dinosaurs, geological shapes, footprints and rocks with odd shapes produced by wind erosion.
