The North region is mainly mountainous, with a beautiful scenery. In the West, there is a high plateau , surrounded by high mountain ranges. In the central area, there are gorges -like the Humahuaca Gorge- which have abrupt slopes.
In the mountains, the snow in the high peaks contrasts with the red, purple and green colours of the bare stone.
Throughout this region, there are picturesque and historic plain villages -such as Purnamarca, Tilcara, Yaví, Humahuaca, Cachi and Iruya, among others- which are immersed in a unique natural scenery.
Purnamarca lies at the foot of the well-known Hill of the Seven Colours, called like this for its odd polychromy.
Salta city is considered the most beautiful colonial city in Argentina. It may also be used as a base for visiting the main tourist points in the region.
Another place worth visiting is the Quebrada (Gorge) of Humahuaca .in Jujuy- with its colourful mountain ranges and picturesque villages, some of which are pre-colombian.
The Train to the Clouds -in Salta- is one of the highest trains in the world and thus enables tourists to enjoy this landscape in a unique way. The salt pits in Salta and Jujuy are another source of great beauty.
